The Hellenic Olympic Committee held its National Launch Event in Athens on the 9th of November 2023.

The Hellenic Olympic Committee (HOC) is a partner of the Erasmus+ project “Guidance to Achieve More Equal leadership in Sport” (GAMES).

HOC organised the National Launching Event on the 9th of November 2023, in concomitance with the awarding of prizes to athletes who are parents and have qualified for the Olympic Games Paris 2024. This was attended by relevant national and regional sports organisations, as well as policymakers and ministries, among others. The HOC President, IOC Member, and EOC President, Mr. Spyros Capralos, delivered an opening speech highlighting the importance of this “dual” event. Distinguished guests such as the Greek Deputy Minister of Social Cohesion and Family, Mrs. Maria Kefala, the Greek General Secretary of Equality and Human Rights, Mrs. Zefi Dimadama, attended the event and delivered opening speeches as well. Moreover, representatives of sports federations, members of HOC Plenary Session and Executive Committee, members of the General Secretariat of Sports and Olympians participated. In total, 98 participants (68 guests & 30 HOC staff) attended the launching event.

The National Launching Event presented the GAMES project, its objectives and relevance. Accordingly, it aimed to present its main deliverables including the Baseline Study and its main finding on gender equality at the national level, the Global Pool of Actions and HOC’s National Action Plan. Therefore, the current challenges in the realm of gender equality in Hellenic leadership were addressed through open discussion/workshops which in turn allowed for the development of cooperation between relevant national/regional and commercial stakeholders.

HOC’s National Launching Event included a panel with the topic “Recommendations for more equality in the leadership of Greek sport”. The speakers, who hailed from the sports and business world respectively, hold or have held leadership positions within distinguished sport organizations. This discussion enabled all participants to take a closer look at the GAMES project, while also exchanging ideas, opinions on how to achieve gender parity in sport leadership, as well as their personal experiences and challenges that they have faced during their career.

Hence, the National Launching Event aimed to share HOC’s National Action Plan whilst further promoting knowledge and information regarding the current situation and foreseen future actions in terms of gender equality in leadership positions. Besides, the National Launching Event served as a springboard to develop measures to promote gender equality in sport leadership in the national ecosystem whilst being a valuable opportunity to further encourage networking and cooperation among relevant stakeholders.
